I use the Orton- Gilingham multi sensory approach.

I Have worked for the Davis County School district for 12 years. The last few years I have been working intervention for students who are not performing at grade level. I have learned that not all kids can learn the way they are taught in school. My 8 year old is dyslexic. I Have studied the Orton-Gilingham multisensory approach to reading and spelling. I have also learned to engage children in activities that are fun and creative. I will not be doing the same teaching style as there school.
ORTON-Gilingham multi sensory approach. Math without words until the concept is mastered. Using lots of manipulatives including video games, that teach concepts.

I have a Master of Arts degree in English from Utah State University and have taught EFL overseas and within the US. Recently (from 07-08), I worked as a Math Tutor for challenged fifth graders and also for Kindergarteners part-time at Lincoln Elementary in Layton while my son was in pre-school. I am competent in elementary math and sincerely enjoy helping others to find the inherent beauty of numbers and what they can do.
I love kids - they are often sweet, funny, easily impressed and are a great audience. I know that it is possible to make learning fun through a close, interactive relationship with a student - showing and guiding them through your own discovery of the subject. There have been times when I could feel one of my students learning; it is always a smile-provoking moment and I treasure every one.

A Little Bit About Me...

My general approach is to assess the student's learning style and adapt my assistance to that as best as I can. I want to help the student become familiar and comfortable with the subject. I am gifted at breaking the subject down into smaller pieces, allowing the student who is struggling to gain confidence. I believe in building the student's understanding of the subject into a broader context to help the student appreciate the subject more and see how it actually applies to real life.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching is something at which I feel I excel. I feel the best way to learn changes in each individual. Not just children, but adults as well. I seek out the best way for individuals to learn and go from there, whether that be through reading, interaction or visual stimuli. Anyone can learn, and achieve whatever they want, they just need to find the appropriate way to do it, and find the motivation to do so. I feel I can help any child do just that.

Teaching is a personal act. I see literature as one of most effective ways that people come to understand one another, the act of reading being a fundamentally unselfish and inquisitive act, an attempt to make sense of and relate to another person’s perspective.
