A Little Bit About Me...

I'm a fifth-teen year old, currently enrolled at Thomas J. Corcoran High School, where I am a sophomore I currently take IB classes and wanted to start tutoring to pass the time and pick up a little extra cash. I'm drug free and have never tasted alcohol. I try to be patient and usually am. I'd prefer to work with children still in elementary or middle school, seeing as I haven't learned everything yet. I know the basic and more to just about everything eighth grade and below. Typically the setting in which the tutoring will take place will be my house in my dining room area and after that the student may watch television until his or her parent or guardian is there to pick them up.

LESSONS SHOULD ACCOMMODATE STUDENT LEARNING STYLES

I have 15 years of teaching experience with special needs students in a rural school district. During this time i provided private tutoring sessions for Elementary, Middle, High School and College students. At the college level my tutoring experience is with reading, writing, study skills and organization. Currently I develop educational programming for incarcerated youth.
My belief is that all students have different learning styles. Therefore lessons need to be individualized to meet student needs. In order to be successful students need to be engaged by creative teachers. My teaching experience has taught me to accommodate these needs when developing lesson plans.

My extensive experience in different subjects and venues has engendered in me an adaptive teaching style. I am very comfortable teaching in both a classroom setting as well as one-to-one. I truly believe that the key to learning is proper motivation. Rather than giving answers to a student who is having difficulties, I prefer to guide students, prodding them along in the right direction with directed prompts. My goal is to have a student retain what he or she has learned from going over a particular subject rather than simply memorize and immediately discard.

I have complete confidence that all children are able to learn, but I also understand that some children are bored with it. While I was in high school I had a few teachers who put me to sleep. I didn’t learn anything from them, because their teaching style was very dull. I learned that education is what you make of it – learning can be fun! I am patient, easy going, and considerate. Each person has a different style of learning that he or she gravitates toward, and I will discover that unique style for each and run with it. Every child has a right to a sound and complete education, and I will help your child succeed.
I went from a child who didn't enjoy reading to a young adult who finds enjoyment in books. I also recognize how having a passion to read provides that individual with the ability to ultimately obtain a higher position in a career, which in turn allows him or ... read more

I love to teach by arousing the thinking faculty of my students with questions that makes them think in the line of the subject. Use of illustrations, applying the subject being discussed to real life situations, one that students can relate with, is a very handy tool for me and has worked very well over the years. Thorough explanation, an encompassing summary and point tags on core areas of the subject are vital tools in making subject stick to the mind of students.

I have always enjoyed teaching people in a one-on-one or small group environment. It allows me to tailor my teaching style to fit the individual student or group I’m working with. I enjoy using creative methods to teach a topic, including creating multiple ways to explain a term or concept and providing analogies to concepts that are familiar to the student. All people comprehend concepts in different ways and at varying speeds. Thus as I teach a concept I am constantly looking for signs of understanding, and then stop and reinforce a concept when it is apparent that the student does not understand. Teaching is a very fluid process, one that requires acute understanding of the challenges students face when learning, and an active process that requires energy and intelligence on the part of the teacher, qualities I believe I possess.
I was fortunate to be able to enter college ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have earned my bachelors degree in Biotechnology. I will be finishing my masters in education May 16, 2010. Recently I worked in an environmental laboratory where I performed what is taught in the biology and chemistry classroom on a daily basis. I have had a great deal of experience working with youth in many different situations and despite my enjoyment for laboratory work I found myself excited to enter into the teaching profession.
