I can relate best with the student/youth.

I attended Rufus King World IB High school in Milwaukee, Wi, one of the most prestigious inner city high schools in the country. I excelled in IB Geography, Chorus, and Theatre. I was one of those kids who never did any homework, but passed my tests. Everyone came to me for help on projects, homework, ect. I feel that I didn't fully utilize my strengths in school as I could have, so I would love to share that with those who need it now.
Very relaxed, easy going, friendly. I feel less pressure and non stressful settings help students learn better. They can relate to a younger person who is more in tune with youth and someone who understands them.

A Little Bit About Me...

Students generally perform better with hands-on practice. I provide multiple opportunities for hands-on and guided practice as time permits. Associate new concepts to familiar ones. Our memories are largely associative in nature. Therefore, providing connections from new concepts back to well established ones increases our retention and recall. This is especially important in building up understanding in mathematics. Provide relevant examples. A student who is actively enaged in the lesson will learn more.
For the past two years, I have been working as an adjunct instructor and tutor in mathematics and computer information systems for a local Community College. This experience has been so fulfilling, that I am diligently pursuing a career change from Information Technology professional to teaching. I also taught mathematics for one year at a private school.

Four years ago, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from a local university. I received a BS in Rehabilitation Studies. This degree prepared me to work with our special population. My ultimate desire was to work with children. Therefore, I returned to UNCG and obtained my License in Special Education K-12. Over the past four years, I have successfully worked in the public school system. I teach at the elementary level which allows me to teach Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. I studied creative writing at the SC Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville SC. There I studied poetry, play writing, grammar, editing, fiction, and creative nonfiction. I won two national scholastic writing awards for my writing. I also studied at Rice University which is a highly selective university in Houston Texas. I majored in sociology and also took many intensive English classes. While a student at Rice, I tutored several of my peers in both sociology and english. After graduating with top honors from high school, I began my college career at the University of North Florida, receiving my BS in biology with Baccalaureate Honors in 2002. I began my PhD in Ecology at Old Dominion University in 2004, and after completing a 150 page dissertation on spiders and carnivorous plants, passing written and oral comprehensive exams, and completing over 72 hours of graduate coursework, I was awarded my PhD in 2010.
