Most of the struggling students i have encountered seem to have a low confidence in themselves that interferes with their studies. I believe this is due to the manner in which students are tested; in order to fully understand a concept, the student has to be able to explain the concept and its application in his/her own words. By starting from the basic concept of the field of study and working up, the student can acquire real knowledge of the subject. A Little Bit About Me...

In mathematics, I was taught early on that in order to prove something you need three things: 1. facts that are obvious/self-evident 2. relate them in a logical way 3. frame these facts and their relationships inside of a theory Engineering is just applied mathematics. I believe that anyone can do it, at their level; the key for an educator is to have sufficient people skills to diagnose the problem areas a given student might have and then address those in the context of solving a given problem.
During my time at NC State, I worked at the mathematics laboratory for two years. In that short amount of time, I learned as much as I taught. I like to go through every type of problem like this while they write the steps of how to do the problem down and then try to solve each problem step by step.
