Education is the process of guiding children or adults in the experience of learning meaning of things. In other words, teaching words without establishing a proper sense of the meaning of those words dulls the intellectual life. My teaching style can be called old-fashioned: the best results come from patient, focused, disciplined time on task. To learn math one must work a variety of problems, and practice them diligently. My strength as a tutor is my ability to explain the algorithms in a way that students can easily grasp. This includes the vitally important requirement of why the problem is worked the way it is, not simply how.
I taught high-school math for 14 years, everything from Pre-Algebra to Calculus, in both public and private schools. I also have extensive writing experience, including for many newspapers, and am currently teaching Political Science at the Community-College level. Thus, I could tutor math, and/or any subject or assignment that required verbal and writing skills. I tutored UTK athletes in math and philosophy, and proctored Pre-Calculus at UTK as well.

I love the give and take of working with high school students. I relish hearing fresh, young opinions and seeing how they decide what they believe in and why. My style entails showing a student the relevance of what he or she is doing. It is important for a child to know WHY what they are supposed to be learning is so important; they need to know how it will help them years from now after the classes are over. My best quality as a teacher is my ability to connect on a level that is comfortable for my students. A Little Bit About Me...

I taught for the public school system in Memphis, TN for 17 years with 15 of those years in the same school. I have taught kindergarten, first, second, and third grade and for 3 years I taught a second/third split class of exceptional students. I quit teaching for a short period because I adopted 2 children overseas. However, I worked part-time as a computer instructor for preschoolers for about 2 years. For the past 2 years, I have been trying to continue my career as a teacher, but have not been able to because of the economy. I have spent these 2 years, substituting, as an interim teacher, as an assistant, and tutoring for a company called A to Z.
