I have experience tutoring this subject for four years. I do not consider myself a teacher but a helper. In my experience, the Socratic method in which I pose probing questions that unlock the student's knowledge is the strongest approach. A student's retention of the material is strongest when the student can teach it, and that's what I aim for. I break down any material the student doesn't understand into terms that are easier to comprehend. Preparedness is expected on the part of the student. I am not a substitute for independent study, and the sessions should not consist of doing homework. I am a resource best used when students have an understanding of what they do need help with. When I teach, I like to focus on the conceptual part of the subject before diving into the problem solving aspect. I believe it is essential to understand the significance of the matter, not just go through the motions. During my time at the University of South Carolina, I was a part-time tutor for the athletic department. There, I provided academic assistance in accounting, college calculus and statistics. I use math on a constant basis, as I interned as an auditor at a public accounting firm in Columbia and was an CoOp analyst for Johnson and Johnson.
