I believe that instructional strategies should be varied and flexible. Students are unique and their learning styles are different. Teachers need to have varied instructional strategies to try and meet the needs of the diversity of their students. I believe that knowledge of subject matter is extremely important, but not the sole component in instruction. In Mathematics, teachers need to have an understanding of mathematics as well as methods for transferring this knowledge to students. A Language Arts teacher may be knowledgeable about reading and writing, but has to find creative, interesting methods and activities to make students want to learn.

I enjoy teaching at a high school level or above. I am very hands on. I am a bit of a story teller - rearranging the circumstances of the problem into an issue more easily related to by the student. I am very patient and relaxed - there are very few people who have a lower stress level than I do.
At MSU, I first worked as a Supplemental Instructor and then became a Graduate Assistant (before I even earned my Bachelor's degree) in the School of Business. I also worked in the math department as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant. I have taught business, accounting and math classes at the college level when instructor was absent. I never really considered myself a teacher as much as just someone who understood something a little better than someone else. To that extent I guess my style is more of helping someone to gain a better understanding of a particular topic or process. Discussion and example as well as some actual hands on tasks will help someone to discover their own potential for understanding and mastering the topic at hand. During my 35-year of teaching, I spent 30 years teaching everything from Alg. 1, Geometry, Alg. 2, Trig., Statistics. I was also a math department chair for 5+ years. In that capacity I wrote curriculum for local and county districts. I also lead my department and county in choosing texts. I worked on committees at the county level in training teachers. A Little Bit About Me...

After earning my accounting degree I worked as an accountant for the University of Akron. Before taking early reirement in 1997, I taught remedial math to the university freshmen approximately five times between 1992 and 1997. During this same period of time, I also worked as a reading tutor for Project LEARN of Summit County. In 2005,I began teaching undergraduate-level history course for Kent State University as I was working on my dissertation. The courses I taught included Early American History, U.S. Modern History, Ohio History, History of World War II, and History of the Vietnam War.
My teaching style is largely inter-active. For math courses, I try to lead students to a better understanding of the principles involved. For history courses, I try to encourage students to analyze, assess, and, if they don't agree,challenge orthodox interpretions of historical facts.
