In 2011 to 2012 I worked as a lead tutor for Academic Achievers in Muncie. My core focus was to improve writing skills. A Little Bit About Me...

I worked as a tutor in college, and I taught some groups of children Spanish and French while in college. After graduating from college, I taught for 4 years, grades 7-12. Also, I worked as a graduate assistant at Indiana State University and taught college freshmen. I homeschooled my own children for several years, and now I work as a literacy assistant in an elementary school.

A Little Bit About Me...

Learning must be fun, especially in a tutoring context. In my previous tutoring experiences, I always attempted to turn tasks into games or opportunities for creative expression. For example, multiplication tables can become an opportunity to play a relay game. Learning different parts of speech can be made enjoyable by creating an imaginative story. My particular interest is helping children develop a passion for creative writing and reading. These were essential elements of my own childhood and my development as a writer, and I'm excited to share this experience with others.

When you learn to play the piano, first you are taught the scales, which you practice over and over and over again. Then you learn pieces of music, with specific counts and phrasing. Finally, once you have all the rules in your back pocket, you can evolve into a jazz artist who seemingly leaves the rules behind. It is the same with language. You first learn and practice the basic components – reading, vocabulary, grammar, usage, three-paragraph themes, etc. Then you find yourself able to experiment with word choice and metaphor.
