My comments on tutoring Journalism : I have over 900 articles published with the former "Globe Democrat."

I am a listener first and foremost. I want to know what my students expect from me and in what areas s/he regard as most essential to her/his success. I believe all people can learn and understand. It is a pleasure to watch students grow in skill and comprehension and move toward confidence.
I love teaching. I earned my BA before I was old enough to vote. While my classmates were in his/her senior year, I was teaching. Eventually I earned my M.Ed. in Reading, then started School Administration and Adult Education. In all these fields I find similar necessary skills: patience, co-operation among staff and colleagues, knowledge of subject matter, communication with the community and parents and a well defined curriculum. Moreover, I am a published author and a former writer with St. Louis Globe Democrat - Suburban Journals. As a favor to my students, I often evaluate papers for subm ... read more

My comments on tutoring Journalism : I was on the journalism team all four years of high school, serving as managaing editor, and sports editor, and was the only writer ot be granted free-lance editorial writing. Furthermore, during college and since I've taken my knowledge of pharmacoogy, biochemisry, chemistry, anatomy, etc. and have written several referenced articels for the online health magainze www.mindandmuscle.net under my name Tom Rayhawk

Learning can be hard. Memorization can be hard. Knowing how to determine the proper equation to use in a chemistry or math equation can be hard. What I focus on with my students is not simply telling them the information and how they should go about finding the right answer but, more importantly, why the answer they are choosing is correct. What that does is to force them to learn the actual skill and when to use a given equation or what a sign or symbol indicates in terms of the type of problem they are trying to solve. By doing this, I find, the student is able to get to the core of not simply stuffing equations, grammar terms, or scientific terminology in their heads and then unloading them on the test. Rather - and this is my main objective with each student - they understand why their answer is right. They LEARN. An easy way to test this is when quizzing them and browsing thei ... read more

I love to work with and help children of all ages with their language skills and understanding. I like to teach through example and help children figure out their problems on their own, but with some guidance.
I am a recent college graduate with a BA in English (emphasis in Creative Writing). I have learned extensive grammatical skills and understanding through my work as an undergraduate as well as through my role as Non Fiction editor of our University's undergraduate literary magazine. I have experience tutoring non-native English speakers in English and have previously volunteered at day care centers, reading to children ages 2-5. I am excited to be given the opportunity to tutor again!

Most of my teaching experience has come through the various assistantships I had at Wheaton College. These involved a wide range of tasks, from tutoring to leading discussions to conducting extensive research. I have been able to sharpen the skills I developed as an undergraduate through my studies and teaching opportunities at Notre Dame. Not only that, I have witnessed the art of pedagogy reach a level of excellence I had never thought possible. These first-rate professors combine raw intellectual power with gentleness, jocularity and humility, and while I am on leave this year from the program, I would be proud to help students in even a fraction of the way these individuals have helped me.
Excellence in teaching, I believe, depends less on method and more on the character of the teacher. Since a student is a human being before he or she assumes the role of the learner, it is in ... read more

I have enjoyed a successful career in sales for well over 20 years. In my sales career, I was involved with training of new and prospective employees. This involved showing them all aspects and functions of their jobs, along with utilizing exceptional communication skills, both verbally, and in writing. I was also involved in the hiring and firing process at times. I have learned that, with persistence, perserverence, the desire to learn, that just about anyone can achieve what they want in life. It makes me proud when a new employee strives for excellence, and I hope that they always continue growing, both personally and professionally. It is a priviledge to be a part of that experience.
I teach each person on an individual level. There are several reasons behind this. Some of them are: people have different strengths and weaknesses, people learn at quicker/sl ... read more

I graduated from Columbia University with a BA in English and political science and spent the four years following graduation working on the communications team for Mayor Michael Bloomberg in New York City. In that capacity I supervised a staff of five full time employees and a variable number of interns. That experience was helpful in terms of learning to teach and mentoring college-age and post-college individuals. I moved to St. Louis about two months ago and will be starting a PhD program in English literature at Washington University in the fall. As part of that program I will be teaching college writing. I have extremely strong writing skills and look forward to helping others learn to read and write at a higher level.
I am passionate about literature, writing, and proper grammar, but I also have a strong grounding in pop culture, which helps, I think, to make the subject mat ... read more
