A Little Bit About Me...

My personal style varies on the pupil. These may vary from simply being frustrated with the curriculum to a myriad of influences. My style is considered out of the box, meaning that if the standard method does not "click" with him/her, then I enjoy finding something of interest to them, to relate that to the subject at hand. Keeping a students interest is paramount to keep them enthusiastic about learning.
Along with a Bachelor's Degree in Business, I have many educational experiences in the area of science, math, history (to name a few). And in all levels of the educational process; from elementary through high school and even collegiate. My previous experience has included high school students and many college undergrads.

Ready to love learning

I currently work as a substitute teacher at Riverside Military Academy. I've worked with elementary children and teenagers extensively. My most recent position serves twenty and thirty somethings in their personal and spiritual formation. I have published my writing, acted on stage, spoken before thousands and mentored dozens. My personal intent is to explore life, discover new things, tackle hard challenges and inspire others to do the same. I believe in the value of the individual and don't believe one-size-fits-all.

Dedicated to helping children accomplish personal goals!

I have been working with special needs students with various disabilities for 10 years. I have worked with students ranging from ADHD/ADD to those who are bed ridded and need toileting assistance. I have also had to accommodate with feeding and those who are transitioning out of high school. I can teach students how to read and write and how to ride the city but to where they need to go and make it back home. I have also taught cooking and hygiene skills.
I am patient, go at the students level, and believe in the use various types of visual aids and hands on to keep my students engaged. Students learn and retain information quicker with continual repetition; however each student will grasp the information different from another and some will take more repetition than others.

To me, the process of asking questions and allowing the student's curiosity and intelligence to reach conclusions is far more effective than one-sided lecturing. I do have a preferred teaching style, but I will accommodate the student’s preferences. My preferred teaching style is to guide students, not lecture or do their homework for them. Your ability to learn material will be greatly increased by exposure to critical decision making steps as you work problems. I will guide students to these steps as efficiently as possible and wait for a rigorous effort from the student. This will result in either a correct approach or an inappropriate or incorrect approach. After that point I then congratulate the student for a correct answer, or thank them for their effort and try to break down the decision making process so that they can learn from the experience and gain a real understanding of the problem.
