My approach to teaching is more of a "why" approach. It is more important for students to know why something is or works rather than just how. This approach works well for middle and high school students. It allows students not only to understand the ideas taught but to apply them to other areas as well. I also like to use visual aids as well as conversation. I have found that many of us vary widely in learning styles. Some are visual learners, others are audio learners, and still others are a combination. I work well one-on-one but also enjoy small groups. I believe that instructional strategies should be varied and flexible. Students are unique and their learning styles are different. Teachers need to have varied instructional strategies to try and meet the needs of the diversity of their students. I believe that knowledge of subject matter is extremely important, but not the sole component in instruction. In Mathematics, teachers need to have an understanding of mathematics as well as methods for transferring this knowledge to students. A Language Arts teacher may be knowledgeable about reading and writing, but has to find creative, interesting methods and activities to make students want to learn.
