I typically help a student by example, if applicable. In math courses, I find that working through problems with the student is best. For science courses, going over concepts in the chapters before doing problems works best. I also help the student take better notes in class and take better notes when reading the chapter.

In January of 2008, I was hired to work at the University of Akron – Wayne College Learning Center as a peer tutor. We are responsible for helping students that come in seeking tutoring (including test preparation and homework help). Over the past two plus years, I have tutored students in mathematics (college level basic math 1 through calculus one) and chemistry. When a question is asked, I am not going to simply just tell the student the answer. I would want them to think it out and try and figure it out for themselves. I would however guide them in the right direction and even ask them other questions they may know in order for them to figure out the intial problem. I feel that these types of interactions are a more effective way of learning. Also, writing things down helps tremedously because not only are you thinking it, but you're seeing it and reading it as well. I am a very easy person to get along with, and I am also very encouraging. I enjoy helping others whether it's in an academic environment or not.

I have a B.S. degree in Information Systems with over 30 years experience in the computer industry. I have 9 children which are home schooled (ages 3-17). I'm a math/science guy. I have taught Junior church in the past.
I believe in learning to do things the "hard" way for math, making change, etc. Calculators are good for higher functions and after basics are learned. At MSU, I first worked as a Supplemental Instructor and then became a Graduate Assistant (before I even earned my Bachelor's degree) in the School of Business. I also worked in the math department as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant. I have taught business, accounting and math classes at the college level when instructor was absent. Accounting is by far my strong suit, followed by Excel, Economics and Math, however I do not use high-level math often, although I got A's in everything throughout college.
