I take the role of an expert as well as a facilitator while I'm teaching. I like a jump right in style that is forthright and honest. I have a sense of humor, and will use it teaching, but only sparingly. I believe that the student's desire to learn is the biggest factor in his or her mastering information. I have a lot of experience working with students who have had terrible education experiences, who have not had support at home, who have made bad personal decisions. These all effect knowledge, but not the ability to learn. I love to see students grasp something that has eluded them previously. I firmly believe that children's and adults lives can be changed for the better from good teaching, and I strive to impart real skills and develop character. I enjoy working with students in small groups, or one-on-one, I believe that in order to help a student succeed in a subject matter in is first necessary to show him/her a real life application of the skill set you are teaching. If you are teaching successive addition or subtractions, the use of a checkbook, and mock purchases, will allow the student to see the value of learning the skill as opposed to simply thinking of it as one more "rote task" she/he must learn to get a passing grade.
