A Little Bit About Me...

I was in a program called "Study Buddies" all four years at high school. I would devote a couple afternoons a week tutoring middle school students (and eventually high school students). During this time I would help them study for tests, complete assigned work, or help clarify any material that the student didn't understand. Also, I helped these students develop their writing and grammar skills. Starting my junior and senior year of high school, I began "one on one" tutoring with selected individuals. Study buddies was a program where several students would show up and the helpers would assist accordingly, but when I began tutoring I specifically met with them at assigned times. I tutored mainly in math, but I also helped with all of their homework and helped them study for tests. I found it to be an excellent learning experience for me as well as the student. I am fairly laid back. Above all else, I tell my kids that to be focused and to concentrate in chess requires a strong will to win, but winning is not everything. I think of chess as an art form. It takes two people to contribute to the beauty that is chess. Some of my most intellectually satisfying and artistic games have been losses, yet even in losing, I was able to contribute something meaningful and beautiful. Above all, my students seem to understand that when chess stops being fun, it is time to step back and reflect. In chess, the real opponent is one's self.
I have been playing chess since the age of 5. I lived and played in the U.S. as well as in France. In addition to playing, I have also been coaching scholastic chess since about 2005. My Middle School team won 5 consecutive city championships (Rochester, MN). We have also had several fourth place and one first ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to learn, and when sharing that knowledge, my ultimate goal is to leave the student with a spark that will hopefully motivate them to pursue the subject above and beyond the lesson. Motivation, learning style, and goal structure are components I consider when setting up a lesson. As a computer programmer, I tend to be task oriented. I like to break a project into smaller chunks with clear boundaries. I believe that having the student participate in defining these goals helps them focus, keeps them from getting overwhelmed, and gives them a way to measure their own success. In addition, the teacher needs to ensure the student is motivated to learn by providing materials and methods that are of interest to the student, and match his/her learning style.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a tutor I have discovered that everyone learns differently; therefore, I try to find ways to adapt my own tutoring style to the learning styles of the people I tutor. I can be more hands-on if the student requires it, but I can also act as more of a general guide. I believe that it is important for the students to be in charge of the sessions, so I try my best to take my cues from them. I also think it is important to have realistic expectations of the students I tutor. My goal is not to make them English majors or professional writers, but to give them the tools they need to write as effectively as they possibly can.

My ultimate goal is to teach the child that English does not have to be frustrating, it could be a fun subject.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching mathematics and biology. If the student is willing to learn in some fashion I can help him or her. I tend to teach by examples for mathematics and for biology I teach in a lecture style, answering questions in-depth when necessary. In both fields I can give in-depth explanations for concepts. Specifically in mathematics, deriving proofs is especially easy for me and could be useful for those students that wish to see the "why" of certain equations.
As an aerospace engineering student at Embry-Riddle, mathematics comes quite easily to me. I enjoy solving and creating mathematical problems. At Embry-Riddle I quickly became known as the "go to" guy for all math related questions. Within the first two weeks of the first semester I was leading a Calculus 2 study group and retained my position as such until the end of the semester. While the study group dwindled ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching has always been my passion & I enjoy every minute. I believe that all children can learn given the oppurtunity to learn verbally, kinesthetically or whatever way they learn best. Being a preschool teacher I have learned to be patient and strive to give each child the ability to succeed. I have also learned to be versatile in all of my teaching, trying different approaches to learning concepts when one approach doesn't work. I am open to children's thoughts and ideas & try to be a good listener. When frustration occurs I am able to calm the student & give them the redirection they need. Children are our future in every way & I try to help them be the best they can & achieve academic success as well as a good self esteem.

During my undergrad studies at UWRF, I was sponsored to become a tutor in the Writing Center on campus. There was a prerequisite practicum, but it was very hands-on learning. I worked with students from a variety of backgrounds (ESL, freshman comp, MS candidates, etc). At Metro State I participated in a semester program teaching English in Puerto Rico, for which I received the ESL certification. I also TA'd for Writing and Designing for the Web.
I am a very adaptable teacher--I can easily pick up on a student's needs and abilities, and work to their strengths in that way. I enjoy not only helping them learn, but also their backstory and considering how it affects their learning style. I also have an innate love of learning, and feel that it's a great gift to help someone realize their own potential.
