After attending the University at Albany for four years I have accumulated a wealth of experience in Chemistry and Physics which has culminated in multiple accolades and two degrees. Previously, while a member of the national honor society in high school I tutored many elementary and high school students in subjects such as math, science, and history.
In my experience, most students under perform in science and math due to the an inability to relate theses subjects to practical real life examples. Connecting chemistry and physics principles with analogous real life examples is the key for students to become both interested and proficient in these subjects. I believe that each student learns differently. The order in which a topic is taught to one person may not be the best way for someone else to understand the material. So I strongly support the use of flow charts, comparison charts, timelines, and picture diagrams with detailed descriptions. I think it is important to first identify where in the lecture the material becomes confusing or difficult, and then determine which organizational diagram should be used to simplify the flow and details of the material presented. I hope after the tutoring sessions the students gain new study techniques such as using diagrams and charts to speed up and clarify any type of subject matter that is presented to them in the future.
