A Little Bit About Me...

Although I had a family and worked full time I decided to go back to school and get my advanced degree from Johns Hopkins University. It was a great school and I felt a wonderful sense of accomplishment by obtaining my degree. While obtaining a BA degree from Johns Hopkins University, I was inducted into the honor society Alpha Sigma Lambda, and president from 2000-2002. During that time I tutored adults with problems in basic math skills, reading and writing. Although I did not obtain a teaching certificate - I began my master's degree in Education from Johns Hopkins University in Adult Learning. I moved out of the area before I could finish the degree. I have learned extensive skills from the graduate courses and also from the student teaching that was required during those years.
I have always enjoyed tutoring students. I would like to be able to give something bac ... read more

Now that I am going back to school to study law in the fall I want to start tutoring part-time again.

After receiving my undergraduate degree from University of DE and my master's degree from Wesley College I pursued my passion of giving back. I currently work with college students helping them explore their inner leadership abilities. I use both of my degrees every day; serving as a voice for underrepresented populations and I thoroughly enjoy budgeting and planning for the Office of Student Life. I enjoy supervising students of all ages, majors, and background. Also, I supervise undergraduate research utilizing not only my interpersonal skills but also my grammatical skills.

A Little Bit About Me...

In my experience with teaching, I find that the best way to connect and convey the information is to provide aural, visual and experiential exposure to the material. Everyone does not learn at the same pace or through the same exposure to material. It is also important to be perceptive to the possibility of student frustration as this is almost always a road block that will arise and if not identified can lead to lower absorption of the material or complete lack of understanding and drive altogether.
As a re-founding member and President of the Syracuse University chapter of the National Society of Pershing Rifles (www.pershingriflessociety.org) I was responsible for the planning and instruction of between 12 and 20 students in the areas of Leadership, Project Management, Exhibition Drill and Wilderness Survival. As a supervisor and trainer in the military, it was my responsibility to train the new individuals that came into the job. There was a lot of studying material that I constantly had to sit down and go over with them. We made flashcards, took notes, made up quizzes, did verbal question and answers, etc. I actually used to tutor math in High School when I was in an advanced Calculus class and have helped many friends with their college math. As a grad student, I am writing lots of essays which has really helped me with my English skills. I have a lot of academic experience that I would love to utilize while tutoring.
I have taught a few weapons classes and use of force classes as a security forces member in the Air Force. However, I have never taught classes on a regular basis.

In addition to my undergraduate degree, I earned my law degree in 2010. While enrolled, my reading and writing skills were honed. I was required to demonstrate proficiency in legal writing as well as an understanding of my intended audience. Grammar and spelling were expected to be top notch. These skills were applied to research papers (30 + pages) and essays (4-10 pages). Additionally, review of class notes during the semester is a must. Before law school, I was a budget analyst for a large government agency. I trained over 100 employees on the agency’s new financial system. I was tasked with drafting materials and structuring each session. I also used the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Access, Outlook, and Word) extensively.

As a teacher I believe that students learn best by doing, so I plan my lessons to engage students with meaningful activities that are mastered with hands on activity rather than teacher lead discussion.
I have worked in a wide range of business and educational settings and have worked with students from grade school to adult. When I earned my BS in English, with a thirty credit business minor, I already had fifteen years experience working in a family run retail store. I have since worked a range of jobs including teaching business, computer and English classes. I also worked as a computer systems installer, service manager and office manager. I bring to my teaching a wide range of experience combined with a strong understanding of my subject areas.
