Post-pubescent persons have a great capacity to learn abstract material; all that is necessary to open that potential is to motivate them. I do not specialize in that motivation. I do, however, excel at taking a puzzled student and explaining the difficult material in a way that makes sense to him or her. I have earned a B.S. in mathematics. While attending Virginia Tech I would regularly tutor fellow students taking courses that I was in or had currently taken. That experience teaching led me to pursue a position teaching after graduation. I taught Algebra II, Calculus, and Computer Science at a high school in Northern Virginia for a year and a half before deciding to go to law school.
Math is a different subject than most as it builds upon itself. When teaching a higher level math I like to start with a review of the lower level math used in the process prior to explaining the more advanced procedure. I am also not a component of calculators. I first show a student how to do the procedure without a calculator then after they have mastered the process I will show them the calculator method.

Most students are very capable, they just need someone to explain the material in a way they understand. Some students are visiual learners, other kinetic learners or they learn by doing.
