I like to be interactive- when I'm teaching I prefer to work through a problem with a student together the first time, letting the student more or less watch me. The second time through, we approach the problem with a little more weight placed on the student. The third time I ask the student to attempt the problem on his/her own, and I'm available for questions.
I have tutored classmates and friends throughout college and after in science and math disciplines. My younger sister struggled in school and I assisted her with all disciplines from grades K-12. I enjoy teaching math because its something you use in every day life. When it comes to math, I am easy going and patient because I know how stressful math can be if you are struggling with it. I love having the skill to be able to teach another person that skill. In the past, I have used analogies to help students to understand. Some students were able to catch on when I would use a different approach with others. My goal is to make it as easy as I can so that the student will come to love using mathematics.

Since I remember my days as a student, I am very patient with students who’ve never been exposed to certain subjects or materials. I believe you can only move onto more complex areas after you have gained a thorough understanding of the basics. I prefer to use real-world examples to illustrate abstract concepts. In areas like mathematics and physics, I teach students methods of how to solve problems, not just to come up with the right answer. These methods can then be used in other disciplines or applied to their later lives.

As a graduate of both Purdue University and the University of Kansas, I place a premium of education in my own life. In my view, education is never wasted and helps people to understand various facets of the world we live. As an undergraduate at Purdue, I tutored other undergraduates with college algebra during my last year. I found these students benefitted greatly from my tutoring. On average, the students improved their test scores by two letter grades. In having the opportunity to once again tutor students, I feel I will have made a difference in the lives of those students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been tutoring since high school. When I was in high school, I tutored my brother in elementary level math. When I was in college, I tutored students in chemistry and math. I have a bachelor's degree in chemistry and have also had numerous math courses. I can tutor in any math subject up to calculus 2 and up to any undergraduate chemistry course.
I find that the best way to tutor my students is to find out what they are struggling with the most in a subject and then helping them with the basics in that subject. I work with the student on the basics and then build up to more difficult material. I am patient with students of all ages. I believe that knowing the basics of a subject is always important.
