Pre-Algebra is one of my top subjects! This and Algebra I are my two strongest areas. I consider "pre-algebra" to be the same as the cumulative middle school course called "8th grade mathematics" as opposed to "math" which I would consider "elementary math." When I got certified to teach in Virginia, this was my focus! The reason: This is the foundation for all math that follows--including Algebra I. If you learn how to problem-solve and other basic skills that enable to you take what you know and apply it in situations that might look slightly or significantly different, it enables you to effectively problem solve as you continue to further your education. What I try to do first is get the student to work out the problem, and as they are doing that I will work the problem as well. We will go over our answers together so I have a chance to explain the problem to the student. I believe that repitition and practice makes perfect as long as you have someone to explain it along the way. I will thoroughly explain the problem to the student if they don't understand it. By the end I would hope that the student could then explain how to do the problem to me.

Elementary, Middle, High School and College Tutor

I have tutored and mentored students for more than five years in Algebra I & II, Trigonometry, Physics, Chemistry, English and ESL. I have a degree in Psychology and a certificate in TEFL. I believe tutoring is a really helpful and useful addition to class and studying by oneself because it is reviewing class material once again and it is a way for students to be accountable to yet another person who knows the answers to their questions and can help them work to that answer as well.
I usually start with a diagnostic test to concentrate on weaker areas then come up with a weekly plan focusing on those areas. After a lesson, I usually give worksheets and sometimes online exercises, depending on the subject, and use videos and games if applicable.
