A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is basic. I feel it is most important for a student to grasp the basics before they can move on to more complicated subject material. I also am a strong believer of parental involvement. A parent knows their children's learning patterns best. I like to use different approaches. Activities that are visually and mentally stimulting help to form a connection between the student and the lesson. It is important to me that each of my student's set and acheive goals.
As a high school student, I attended Tiffin University to gain college experience and credit earlier than expected. Upon the completion of my undergraduate studies, I was encouraged to sign up as a substitute teacher. This subsequently led to a full time position, where I taught Junior High Mathematics. I also coached wrestling and mentored the Quiz Bowl team.
I truly miss teaching and mentoring kids. I approach teaching as an opportunity to bring out the maximum potential within each student. I am a recent college graduate and I am looking for employment within my field. I have two years experience tutoring an elementary student. I have taught computer science courses in business college, and I taught algebra, calculus, and statistics as a graduate student. I remain convinced of the necessity of obtaining basic math skills for success in today's world, and I spend a lot of time maintaining my own skills in math and computers. I am currently spending 8-12 hours per day, mostly programming vectors and mathematical functions as spreadsheet macros.
I try to find a common, basic level of understanding with the student and then show how a few key insights can help the student broaden her/his knowledge. In math, for example, this typically means showing how elementary concepts can be applied to simplify more complex problems, such as showing how such things as the distributive and associative properties are being used in solving equations, sometimes in a context where these things are often glossed over.
