A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy getting to know my students' strengths and areas in need of support, so that I may better facilitate learning in those areas. By learning of their strengths, I have access to their interests, which guide my choice of materials. I believe students are more motivated as learners if information is presented to them in interesting forms.
As an ESL, grades 9-12 teacher, I am very familiar with identifying students' individual strengths and areas in need of support. Every one of my students learns differently. I must design curriculum that can be easily differentiated. This makes me an excellent tutor, because this is what it takes to tutor. As a college student, I tutored many other graduate students that were attaining their degrees in this country and needed to hone their English language skills before returning to their home nations.

I have worked with students of many different backgrounds, ages, and abilities. I love to help a student find that "a-ha" moment where he or she finally understands a concept that has been a struggle. I enjoy teaching new concepts or working with students to master a concept.
I currently teach in an interim classroom for secondary students who have been suspended or expelled. I teach all subjects, but am most comfortable with LA and math. I believe the best way to learn is peer-to-peer learning. As an auto-didact I have the study skills necessary to regurgitate information as taught by the current institutional models. This is an uncreative and highly unnatural way to learn. There's a reason no major discovery was made in a classroom -- true innovation, discovery and learning is an organic process.
I'm a student at Augustana College whose academic record has ranged from public school to home schooling to community college and and even private education. I've worked as a tutor for over 2 years at Black Hawk College, at the same time obtaining an Associates Degree.
