I tutor Math from the point of view that the shortest path is the best path but everyone learns differently and finding the right method for my students is one of my main goals when tutoring. For math, I would explain the mechanics and techniques of how to get the answer. I want to make sure the student understands fully so I would also be asking the student questions just to ensure he or she knows the material well. For English, I would focus on practicing and discussion. Since it is a langauge, I focus more on practicality. I would also talk to the student and discuss whatever he is having trouble with so that I can give him or her tips to improve.
I have usually insisted in helping people who have struggled in English and Math. I would do my best to explain the material until the student would have a solid understanding of the material.
