I am a chess expert and experienced tournament player who has won state titles several times. I also have been teaching individuals and school chess clubs for over 20 years. Generally considered one of the best chess teachers in MN. Prefer a more casual approach but can create lesson plans for more detail-oriented people. I am near master strength (expert USCF) with experience handling students of all ages. Had a US under 8 champion as well as MN state champions under my tutelage. Worked with single students and groups over 20. I have directed summer chess camps and assisted in youth chess tournaments. As a teacher I have always desired to teach in a way that I know I am communicating with my students. My teaching style includes making eye contact with my students to make sure they are with me. If I sense that their eyes have "glazed over," it is time for a change of pace. I might interject some humor or tell a short story to give them a break. I know that learning is hard work. I would also use games and projects to give them a change of pace. Sometimes I would assign a lesson for them to teach. Taking classes on field trips as an occasional alternative to classroom teaching is another tool I use, giving my students a passive learning experience. I strive to make the learning experience enjoyable. As a high school student, I began teaching Sunday School and continued throughout my college years. While stationed in the USAF in Alaska, I decided to pursue teaching as a career.

I believe that people learn in different fashions. For example, I feel that some concepts may be better explained with tangible objects while other concepts are learned better when questioned and discussed. By exploring the different ways of learning we can find what works best for that individual and use that method as a tool for their understanding. I feel, in the past, that many of the peers I tutored not only obtained/recollected more information, but were more comfortable in a quiet, relaxed environment. By providing this, it sets the foundation for them to focus on the task at hand. Having attended higher learning institutions for over 6 years, my drive for more education is apparent. I love helping students learn new information. Having studied Psychology, I find everyone interesting, and love to learn what makes them "tick". I use this tool to help me better understand where a student is coming from, what motivates them, and what their needs are when it comes to learning. 10 Years of teaching Math experience at the Junior High and Senior High level. I taught Basic Standards Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and ACT Test Prep. Through my Master's Coursework, I integrated the Cognitive Tutor which was a computer program that assisted with the thought process in problem solving. Through the 5 years that I used it, students' interest in Math had risen while still competing with traditional chalk board styles of teaching. My teaching style is one of real life applications, fun, and making it understandable. For example, when discussing slope, we can study downhill skiing or rooftops. When solving equations, I approach it from unraveling a number trick.
