With a little work, you will get there!

Being an undergraduate at WPI and haven taken several Advanced Placement classes in areas outside of math and science, I consider myself a very well rounded student. I was also strongly considered for a MASH program here at the University, or "Math and Science Help", as a Section Leader/Tutor. Going through a lower-middle class urban high school, I was known as that "smart kid" and would often led study groups outside of class to prepare for tests.
I have struggled with the areas I am not proficient in, so I understand what it is to be frustrated and confused. My teaching style is presenting various approaches to the same idea, in hopes that at least one will click, and better yet, each approach with solidify an idea or concept that much more.

Everyone needs a little help here and there.

As a tutor my strength lies in supporting, motivating and encouraging students along with teaching them the importance of discipline and staying focused on studies. I have noticed that for some students the actual problem is not the subject/curriculum, they need help with time management and study skills. I try to teach students how to learn better and faster by managing their time efficiently and by organizing how they study.

I am open to all questions and try to answer all of them. I try to show the student applications of the math I'm teaching, not just formulas and ways things are calculated. I will not leave the student without an answer to his questions. I'm very thorough.

I graduated from the UConn with a B.S. in physics and a minor in mathematics. Because I have used calculus and linear algebra on a daily basis as a means of solving problems I have developed a fundamental understanding of mathematics; an understanding that only someone who has used thse mathematical tools extensively can achieve. I have been tutoring for the past four years. I began tutoring at UConn my junior year and was quickly the most popular physics and calculus tutor on my shift. On several occasions I taught groups of ten or so as a class. It was then that I realized how much I liked teaching. Since I have graduated I have tutored at Sylvan Learning Center and Total Academic Center tutoring various subjects and age groups.
I am easy going, energetic, very passionate (especially when teaching calculus and physics), and engaging. In most cases it takes only a few sessions an ... read more

I have gained an intermediate level in Spanish. Through high school and college, I have tutored high school students and college students in mathematics and have tutored middle school students in math, science, and language arts.

As an undergraduate engineering student and tutor for engineering and other courses, I developed a strong background in the techniques and skills necessary in many levels of math, science, and technical writing. Additionally, the rigorous demands of engineering school have taught me the persistence, organizational ability, and other academic skills required of any tutor or student. My graduate study in special education, volunteer work, and experience as the brother of a child with special needs has given me a great deal of experience working with students with disabilities and knowledge of issues which they face in academic settings. During the school year, I work as a learning specialist for college students with learning disabilities. This has helped me to understand more about differences among students' learning styles and improved my ability to be an effective tutor for stude ... read more

I usually introduce topics by implementing collaborative learning exercises. I ask prompting questions to stimulate my students to be involved in learning the basic concepts. Humor, real-world connections, hands-on materials, and technology help students develop a better understanding and therefore the information is more likely stored in long term memory.

There is no uniquely perfect method for different students. I intend to think as a student and set different goals and solutions for different students. Additionally, I prefer more comprehension, through which the student can only get good comprehension of knowledge.I am a nice tutor, and always ends up good friends with my student. Actually I am still corresponding with my previous students and offering help to them now.

I developed a patient style of simply allowing a student to set his own pace yet make sure he lives up to his own promises. Making lasting commetments allowes the student to take controle of his own improvement, yet allows me to see what he need direction in. In showing the student alternative practices, he will see the benifit in changing his ways for the better.

I have a BS in Chemistry, an MFS in Forensic Chemistry and a strong aptitude in math and computers. As a scientist I routinely mentored the chemists who worked with me and as a supervisor I was responsible for the training of new hires. I was the designated Lab Math trainer for 4 years and have provided training in numerous software applications as needed. I have also been teaching adult classes at my church for the last 10 years.

I stress teaching fundamental principles through an interactive teaching style where students actively participate in learning and solving problems. It is important that students understand fundamental concepts. Relying solely on rote memorization of facts will not lead to success science and math. For younger students I use hands-on demonstrations and visual aids as tools to teach basic scientific principles in a fun and active environment. For more advanced students I teach how to apply fundamental principles to solve problems. I work through typical example problems with them to illustrate practical application of principles. I then ask students to solve problems themselves to develop and ensure understanding.

A Little Bit About Me...

While attending the University of Massachusetts at Lowell I work to help other students that were having difficulty understanding the material presented. I obtained a bachelor of science in Civil Engineering, with a concentration in Structural Analysis. The course work gave me a very strong understanding of Mathematics, and Physics. Also, the quantity of lab reports I have written has given me an advantage in writing non-technical reports along with technical reports. I have worked as a college math privately and through other companies.
My teaching style is very simple and I believe it is effective. I have found that going through problems does not always help kids learn. I always try to tutor the basics and establish a plan for problem solving. The children need to know how to attach a problem not how to plug numbers into equations.
