My career passion has always been to work with kids. I received a BA degree from the University of Oregon in Family & Human services. I began working right out of college with homeless and runaway street youth as a caseworker for almost 3 years. As you can imagine, this job was heart breaking and emotionally taxing. There really is nothing I enjoy more than a good tutoring session. I like passing on the knowledge I have, and especially to students who have trouble, and then find success in working with me. I introduce every new math idea in the purest conceptual form, and then I show the student the practical use they can apply in their homework or on tests. I am a big fan of flashcards or a sheet of notes that reflect everything we learned in the session together. It enables me to show the parents our progress, as well as a resource for the student to refer to for help during homework or test prep. I have always preferred an interactive teaching style. At times in Mongolia I found the language barrier to be inhibiting the learning of the students. This caused me to explore different teaching methods which I otherwise would have never considered. For example, I often chose to teach language by acting out the word or phrase, or having a student act it out. However, there were some classes that were not responsive to this type of teaching and, as a result I resorted to what I had previously considered arcane and authoritarian: repetitious call and response, and by rote. Although I have earned my degree, BS in Psychology, my previous education includes 2 years at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and 2 years of Engineering at Oregon State University.
