Pick out what's good and encourage that. It is too easy to focus on the negative. As a writer who understands rejection very well, it has humbled me. Another set of eyes always helps during the editing process. Sometimes a writer just needs to be set on the correct path, and they can do much of the rest from there. Being a parent has also taught me patience, which is something any teacher needs. Also, reading helps you become a better writer. I'm patient. I'll try and make my lessons easy to understand. I know how frustrating language arts can be, but I also know how rewarding it can be as well. I can relate very easily to high school students, because I just graduated from high school 5 years ago.
I started tutoring in 2009 through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana. I tutor my "Little" for an hour once a week. I help with whatever subject they need. My experience in tutoring has shown me that everyone learns differently. Some students benefit from closely studying the textbook in a course, whereas others became easily overwhelmed reading large amounts of text and instead required a more interactive learning atmosphere based on discourse. I learned to identify a student's learning style and adapt my strategies to match that style. In general, I realized it was important to emphasize the main ideas of course material. I don't think I have really developed a "unique style" by only teaching a year or so. I am a very patient person and I really like to see the "sparkle" in a students eye, when they truly understand something for the 1st time. I like to explain a concept and then give the student a problem and see if they get it. If not, I will go over as many times necessary...until they understand the material.
