My tutoring style focuses on understanding concepts, not simply getting the right answers. This emphasis improves retention and helps students apply their knowledge to new problems. I teach a variety of memorization techniques, but if the student understands a process or formula, memorization is often unnecessary. Whenever possible, I use hands-on exercises, manipulatives, and exploration to help students visualize abstract concepts and discover principles for themselves. Rather than giving answers easily, I ask questions to lead the student in solving problems. I am patient and have a talent for explaining technical information to non-technical people. I was in a program called "Study Buddies" all four years at high school. I would devote a couple afternoons a week tutoring middle school students (and eventually high school students). During this time I would help them study for tests, complete assigned work, or help clarify any material that the student didn't understand. Also, I helped these students develop their writing and grammar skills. Starting my junior and senior year of high school, I began "one on one" tutoring with selected individuals. Study buddies was a program where several students would show up and the helpers would assist accordingly, but when I began tutoring I specifically met with them at assigned times. I have worked most of my life to become an elementary teacher. I have known since I was young that teaching young people was what I wanted to do. I earned a BS in elementary education, with a minor in math. Since graduating and becoming a teacher, I have continued my education through in-services, workshops, and professional book clubs. My responsibilities included teaching, preparing learning materials for basic reading, personal finance, and vocational skills, implementing behavior programs, supervising 7 staff members, and writing quarterly lesson plans and progress reports. I also spent a couple of hours per week for 2 years, tutoring my blind supervisor on the use of computers. My teaching experience began during high school when I would help out at my church's Sunday School providing remedial services like handing out papers. Since then I have earned a bachelor's degree in finance and economics with ambitions to earn a PhD. During my undergraduate experience I tutored beginning accounting students for a couple hours a week aside from the usual work of helping classmates. Upon graduation I began looking other ways to continue teaching. About 10 months ago I began volunteering at a community center.
