Basics of sign language with a focus on building vocabulary, sentence structure (syntax), and fluency.
I have been involved with sign language for six years now. I took two years in high school and two semesters in college. I also tutored four students for a year in the basics of sign. I am also involved with an all sign language church (no voicing), that has a number of deaf members, with which I interact weekly.

I am a strong believer that we all have our own way of learning and it is important to be flexible to the needs of each individual. I have worked as a Counselor for Disabled Adults and see that no matter where a person is developmentally, there is a way to help them achieve a higher level. Patience, creativity and providing a non-judgemental environment are key to helping children and even adults to achieve success. Even the smallest steps forward are still steps forward and should be acknowledged and praised.

I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the State University of New York at SUNY New Paltz and I have matriculated into the Master of Arts in Biology program at the same university. As a result of my many research and laboratory reports I have excellent writing and typing skills and have completed many writing assignments including numerous essays in various fields as a requirement of completing my Bachelor of Science degree. Because I have coursework at the graduate level in the field of biology, I have taught at the college level and will continue to do so next semester, so I have roughly 1 year of experience teaching students.
I have several years experience working with children and adults in the education field. The students I have taught at the college level ranged from late teens to early 30s. As I have worked with such a wide range of ages I am familiar ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I do enjoy helping anyone write a well developed and educated paper on the topic at hand. My specific style of teaching, especially for the 8th grade, is to read the current book being used, and then present my lesson with lecture, interactive discussion and comprehension, based on the age and grade of the student. I like to put the lesson into terms that the age group can relate to, and then assign a memory technique that will teach the students to recall the proper answer by using the examples we have discussed in class. That is the same method that I use myself when I need to write a paper. I read it, analyze it, comprehend it, and then write a paper based on what I can relate it too. This technique is very effective when teaching religion, and I have taught my students to use the same technique when attending academic study.
Upon my decision to return to college and obtain ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I am lucky to have experience teaching in multiple academic settings, which helps make me the well-rounded, enthusiastic educator I am today. For the last three years I have taught English at the high school level and am currently an AP-certified instructor. Prior to beginning my teaching career, I was a writing tutor at my university’s writing lab, where I assisted college students at all stages of the writing process. At a private tutoring firm I conducted a homework club and tutored one-on-one, with significant improvements in SAT verbal and essay scores. My love of English—both reading and writing—comes across in my work and helps students succeed. I enjoy working individually with students to help them reach their full potential.
I am an organized, thorough and knowledgeable teacher who strives to create a friendly, personable rapport with my students. I approach every c ... read more
