My style of teaching/tutoring involves one on one and small group sessions. I feel we work from using the student’s strengths to build math vocabulary, math concepts, math relationships, developing math knowledge and algorithmic skills. I want the students to feel comfortable communicating using math to get help. I strongly believe that to understand math you have to put forth effort to try and do math. I want the learning environment to be relaxed and comfortable. Depending on what type of math and the concepts that need help different tutoring techniques will be used such as: building relationship, hands-on activities, and interactive virtual manipulatives. I was a tutor for math and science while attending college. My work consists of graphing, defining requirements through mathematics, statistical analysis, and many other technical services. I have worked as a ventilation engineer, an industrial hygienist, and am currently a manager for a consulting company. My math skills brought me to Washington, D.C. to present a statistical analysis to the National Mining Association for comments to a proposed regulation. I believe that stepping through any problem and trying to find a "hint" to help work through similar problems will contribute to a student succeeding.

I must admit that my experience with teaching is limited, however I love to sit down with groups of children and help them to discover new concepts and ways to learn the subject matter. I taught five year olds for two years in Sunday School. Every week was a challenge to help them to pay attention and listen well. Fortunately, through a great deal of patience, perseverance, and consideration for the children I was able to make learning about the scriptures fun. I like the tutoring environment because I like seeing individual progress. It is easier to assess where the child is. I believe that the basics are essential to moving forward in education. Memorization of math facts makes it easier for a child to learn new material because he isn't bogged down. I don't believe enough emphasis is placed on arithmetic in today's schools. Basic arithmetic skills make story problems easier. Types of story problems need to be practiced, not just thrown in at the end of a chapter without much information on how to do it.
