I've been passionate about math and physics for as long as i can remember. In high school I was enrolled in every AP math and physics class I could get my hands on, including Mechanics, Electricity and Magnetism, Multivariable Calculus, Vector Calculus, and Differential equations. I continued to pursue physics as an undergrad at UT and am currently a senior set to graduate in december with a bachelors in physics. My comments on tutoring Calculus II : Where Calculus I was a struggle, Calculus II was surprisingly easy to me. I thought it was going to destroy me. The opposite was true. Derivatives and integrals came very easily to me. Differential equations were very tough, yet still manageable. I ended up getting a 4.0 in the class.

I don't any paid, professional tutoring experience. However, I have volunteered my services to family members and friends. During my sophomore year, I took Organic Chemistry and excelled. However, my friends were struggling. They hated me a bit for how easy it came to me. I decided to tutor them and help them with homework assignments and studying. They ended up doing very well on the exams, allowing them to secure a 3.0 or higher in the course. I also had to regular help my classmates out with more complex problems in Physics. I was not so much tutoring as working together with them on the homework, but still, it involved clear explanation and a thorough knowledge of the subject matter.
I always liked playing up my quirky personality. My favorite teachers and professors were the goofy ones, the ones who can relate to the students' fun side. These teachers also challenged me the ... read more

My goal when working with students is to fully describe the steps necessary to solving various classes of problems, often in an outline form, for it is in learning these steps that a student becomes an independent learner. I like to work through as many examples as the student needs, gradually working them into the problem-solving process, until they are able to work a few completely on their own, or, in some way, demonstrate understanding of the material. Of course, this method is a little easier to employ in one on one tutoring sessions, but even with my work in the classroom, I feel student participation is crucial to the learning environment.
While in college (1988-1994), I worked as a grader in the math department, with a goal of providing useful feedback to the students. I also began working as a tutor at Austin Community College (ACC) in their free learning labs at this ... read more

I enjoy working with children of all ages, but particularly excel with more mature students trying to tackle more difficult subject matter. One of my greatest strengths is helping people understand abstract, technical material by simplifying the concepts and using analogies that the student can relate to. Often times we create a barrier because something seems like it should be hard. I make it my goal to break through that barrier by reducing the subject matter to ideas to which the student can relate. There is nothing quite like witnessing an “A-ha!” moment as someone conquers a fearful concept.

I like to use computers and was a volunteer at the Dr. Math website years ago. I start with axioms and build on them, so that there is an organized system for the student. But thanks to the computers, I am a constructivist; if you cannot construct a model then it is suspect. Thanks to the recreational math, I tend to throw in something extra that is just for fun.
