A Little Bit About Me...

I have always had a passion for education. Coming from a large family, I was always helping my younger siblings with their homework and teaching "school" in my mom's study on the weekends. I attended the rigorous International Baccalaureate program at my high school and moved away from home to attend a prestigious liberal arts college. After graduating from Smith College in May I moved to Boston to work at a public charter high school where I worked with a large and diverse student population. I taught a reading class and a Spanish class, coached the co-ed soccer team, and tutored students in several classes, including AP courses. I was also an Americorps service member and tutored elementary school students at two separate public schools.

I graduated from Mansfield University with a BS degree in Elementary Education with honors. I taught a temporary position in third grade (all subject areas), then was asked by the school superintendent to substitute teach in Junior and Senior High School, and Special Education classes, which I did for four more years before I had to move out-of-state for my ex-husband's job. I just spent the last 15 years working for the NYS Dept. of Corrections in many areas. I have worked hard to obtain my duel certification in elementary/special education. I began teaching just months after graduation and have learned a lot of knowledge and commpassion for educations and the learning process. All children are diverse learners. All children learn differently, and no two are alike. Good instruction includes fitting the lesson according to the learner. Tutoring a child who is a book learner is different than a child who needs visuals or manipulatives. Some children need academics tied into real life experiences. My teaching style includes designing instruction according to individual student needs in order to enhance their learning. The Florida Writing Assessment was implemented in grades 4, 8, and 10 as required by a law passed by the 1990 legislature. Does your student need a tutor? Beginning in 2010, each essay was scored by one rater. In previous years, two raters were used and the scores were averaged. Prior to 2010, a student could have received a half-point score, such as 4.5; whereas since 2010, no half-point scores are possible. Additionally, beginning in 2010, each student within the same grade level was required to write an essay using the same mode of writing (narrative, expository, or persuasive).
