Since a child, I have always been curious of the world around me. My interests culminated with the completion of two degrees in the natural sciences. I consider myself a true inter-disciplinarian, supplementing both my degrees with courses in applied sciences, economics and the arts, to improve my understanding of the connections between science and the world. I worked for 16 years as a high school science and math instructor at a small school which necessitated that I teach all the courses in the 9-12 curriculum in rotation. These courses included all levels of mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics. I qualified to teach AP courses and wrote a number of integrated curriculum for my school district. In working with students one needs to have the ability to connect with that student at their level of understanding. This can be different for every student, and the tutor needs to adjust to the student. A tutor has to be able to do this or the student will not be any better off. It is my firm belief that I need to find a way to connect with each student, and find a way to help them understand what they need to learn. Very often in a school setting it is not only the subject matter that can give students a tough time, but a lot of times it is that the student either freezes on tests and quizzes or may not have good test taking skills, and sometimes this needs to be learned as well as a particular subject.

I do not think that lecture or rote memorization are proper ways to educate a child.
