Practical examples and theory are equally important. Before finalizing the class schedule for a semester it is important to understand average understanding of the class. Tutor should ask questions frequently to find out whether class is following or not and accordingly he/she can change the way of teaching. Small evaluation test is good once a week so the concepts get cleared time to time.
I was a teaching assistant for past 1 year for 2 different subjects for 2 semesters. I used to conduct lab sessions, correct home works, labs and quizzes. It was my responsibility to make students understand the lab and help them to get the solutions. I try to analyze not only how they perceive math, but I also look at some of their previous work to deduce what mistakes they are making and (more importantly) if they are making the same mistakes over and over.
