Algebra I is one of my top subjects!

After college graduation, I taught Algebra, Algebra II, Geometry, Earth Science, Biology and Chemistry for one year at a private school in Fresno, CA. I then moved to San Jose, CA and taught at Valley Christian High School. I taught Algebra and Algebra II for one year and then taught Biology and Honors Biology for two years. I also taught Algebra in summer school to students that required more of a smaller, one on one environment to learn. During this time, I earned my California teaching certificate. As mentioned in my earlier description, I have eighteen years experience as an educator. I have taught students of all ages from early childhood through college and non-traditional adult education. I believe in making learning fun and engaging by relating concepts to points of interest for the individual student.
Tutoring differs from teaching in that "style" is replaced by method. Some of the methods I have used in the past are rhythm and music, neumonic devices, and of course, drill and practice. I have been told that I am gifted with presenting material in novel ways.

Most of the struggling students i have encountered seem to have a low confidence in themselves that interferes with their studies. I believe this is due to the manner in which students are tested; in order to fully understand a concept, the student has to be able to explain the concept and its application in his/her own words. By starting from the basic concept of the field of study and working up, the student can acquire real knowledge of the subject. I first started tutoring while attending NCSSM, a state funded boarding school for the "best and brightest" students in North Carolina. I went on to continue tutoring at NC State University, where I took a formal class on tutoring to better my abilities, and tutored non-physics major students, including one with a learning disability. After gaining a B.A. in Creative Writing and minor in physics, I moved to Florida where I obtained my teaching certificate for physics, grade 6-12.
