Learning Can be Easy and Fun!

I am very patient and I make sure the student thoroughly understands a topic before moving on. I motivate the student to succeed and teach good study skills and test taking skills. Normally, I use the student's textbooks and classroom materials during our lessons. For standardized tests, I use prep books, such as Princeton Review. Students do best when they are encouraged and receive positive feedback. My students are extremely satisfied after our lessons, and I receive wonderful feedback from children and adults I tutor.

My comments on tutoring Algebra I : In Algebra 1, students are really learning the" art of problem solving". Compared to previous math, problems get more complicated, both in structure and presentation. Logic skills are required, in addition to the arithmetic skills taught up to this point. Complications arise when the foundational math is not strong, and/or there is difficulty in understanding the questions (often presented as word problems). Whether you need remedial help, or are looking to get ahead, I can help! I have been told I can explain concepts in a way that is easy to understand and easy to remember. Starting with your current math, and going back as far as needed, we build skill and confidence in algebra 1. I have proven strategies and have helped many. One client said it best, "It's simple. My daughter's grade went from D's and C's to A's. Diane knows how to help kids learn and do well in school." Please take a look at the reviews left for me here https://www.wyzant.com/Tutors/mathzap to see if I would be a good fit for you.You can message me here or there to confirm that is really me. I'd love to hear from you!

My goal is to connect with the student at THEIR level. We start by going over the basics of problem solving and work from there to foster independent thinking. I use varied approaches when the student is "stuck." I am friendly, patient and very persistent. I can assist with classwork and homework, and will tailor tutoring sessions to your needs. I will assign supplemental work to advance in the subject area as needed or desired. My ultimate goal - to work myself out of a job!

In tutoring any of the traditional subjects (Latin, Greek, formal/informal logic, rhetoric, critical thinking), I emphasize the objectives common to them all: (1) acquisition of context-specific vocabulary, (2) a feel for the flexibility and polysemy of a given word's lexical-semantic meaning, (3) a comprehension of the text's thematic, stylistic, and evaluative undertones and progression. The three, taken together, require us to formulate arguments by sifting through material, with an eye to analysis on how texts are crafted for presentation in terms of form and content. The result is an understanding on how these three are essential for reading, arguing, and, ultimately, thinking critically. Subjects Tutored: Besides the aforementioned subjects, I also tutor for calculus and chemistry.

My comments on tutoring Algebra I : I can teach different methods in algebra I'm not certified but I'm willing to go out my way to make sure the students not only learns but understands the concept of the subject.

I like to use different teaching styles l teach by helping them the problems on the board or I will explain piece by piece the problems to help students understand clearly

Believe in yourself, and you are half-way there!

My teaching style depends on the student. I am comfortable with trying different study methods in order to figure out why my student is having trouble with a particular subject.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. I love being able to help students feel comfortable with the material they are studying. I have tutored numerous times throughout college, and would like to get back into tutoring students because I find it to be rewarding. As a student who went from living in Germany and being taught that there are many ways of getting the right answer, to moving to America where everything is taught in one way, I have learned to incorporate my tutoring skills to the need of each individual student. I try to figure out what works best for every individual and help them focus on their strength and improve their weaknesses.

My comments on tutoring Algebra I : Former Math professor....

There are three important things that seem very simple that I have learned about tutoring. a) Everyone is scared So much of learning is about dealing with these really harmful notions of self-doubt. I know a guy with a Nobel prize - really, a made in Sweden genuine Nobel prize and he claims that he wrestles with self-doubt when he learns something new. Sometimes my job as tutor is just to get rid of the self-doubt and assure you that you are making progress towards understanding. b)Most of the learning takes place in these short "Aha!" moments and they might be only seconds away. Teaching is really about facilitating learning. The key to good teaching is to find the obstacles, misunderstandings, irrelevancies, etc that are stopping you from the moment of clarity when the subject opens up and you say "That's it?". Sometimes people quit trying when they are literally a couple o ... read more
