I love to teach foreign languages, and I find nothing more rewarding than guiding students on their way to full proficiency. I went from the Boston Public Schools to Commonwealth School and then Wellesley College, and would have been lost, early on, without help from tutors. I majored in English and Russian and work with several communities for whom English is not their first language. I am also a freelance writer and editor and I help my children's friends with their college essays. I work as a substitute teacher with all levels and grades and teach everything but Science and Gym. I am patient and approachable but insist on the value of completing assignments even if the student "hates" them. I am good at explaining how this will be important later, which turns around reluctant learners. I believe in explaining, showing, modelling, and then stepping back while the student tries, explains, and determines where the mistakes come up. I believe that all students learn in their own way and that a teacher must get to know his or her students in order to evaluate their strengths and specific needs. It is important to give students guidance, but also to teach them to work independently to boost their self-confidence. I constantly seek feedback from my students and their parents to find the best way to help them succeed. As a graduate of Yale University, I recognize the value of education for the generation of young people who will soon run our country.
