Reading Tutoring - Wilson, Orton-Gillingham, Lively Letters

Wilson Reading, Orton-Gillingham and Brain Gym® The great advantage of individualized reading tutoring is that my students have my undivided attention, expertise and the promise that I am diligent in using and seeking the exact interventions that they need to learn with confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Wilson Reading is a system of reading tutoring, based on Orton-Gillingham and years of research and experience, that organizes the English language by its six syllable types and spelling patterns. It is recommended for students from grades two through adult who need a higher level of reading intervention than is possible in a regular classroom setting. Orton-Gillingham is an approach to reading acquisition that is well researched and takes the whole child into consideration. Originally taught to doctors, teachers and therapists at Columbia University and at Mass General H ... read more

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : I use a multisensory approach espoused by the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction. Sight, sound, and neurological pathways to develop reading skills are utilized.

I have been a special needs teacher (k-8 moderate disabilities) for seven years, and an Orton-Gillingham instructor for eight years. Prior to my certifications I worked as a volunteer in Boston, Weymouth, and Quincy schools. I earned a Bachelor's in Literature and history in 1993, and am confident about my ability to work with all types of students in all areas of academics. I am a teacher in a substantially separate classroom for children with emotional disabilities. I also work with autistic children each summer in a social skills program. I have co-taught in the general education classroom over the years, and consider myself experienced and well-schooled in all facets of special and general education. I have also tutored children with reading disabilities over the years with great success (no magic elixir, just hard work on the part of the students and my Orton-Gillingham practices). ... read more

My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : As a dyslexic student myself, I have intimate knowledge of the possible difficulties with learning a new language.

As a student, I understand the importance of a good teacher. I always try and help the student find and correct their own mistakes, rather than merely giving them the corrections. I have found that the listening is one of the most important tools that a tutor has at their disposal: in my experience, the student knows where their weaknesses and difficulties lie, even if they are unable to articulate the problem areas. Therefore, as a tutor, I always try and listen carefully to the student and adapt the lesson to each students respective needs.
During the last two years of my undergraduate career I worked as an Arabic and Economics tutor in the Academic Resource Center at Tufts University. With respect to Arabic, I worked with Beginner and Intermediate level students - extensively using Al-Kitaab. Being dyslexic, I have an intimate knowledge of the difficulties that dyslexic students ... read more

I believe that in order to be a truly exceptional teacher, one must put an effort into getting to know their students as an individual. It is important to design lessons that will compliment a student's personal learning style and reflect their interests. I think that learning can be demonstrating in several different capacities. Students should be encouraged to ask questions about their world and explore their natural curiosities. Students should not be afraid to ask questions or to ask for further clarification. They should not be fearful of making a mistake. Mistakes should be used as an essential tool in the learning process. I strive to make a positive impact in the lives of each student.
In May 2008, I received my BA in Elementary Education and Sociology. Upon graduating, I took a summer job working as an Aid for a Collaborative Program. In December 2008, I was hired ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Education is very much my vocation. I began teaching and tutoring during high school, and I have worked with students in every grade from pre-school through freshman year of college. I studied history as an undergraduate because it was a vehicle through which to study all aspects of life, and I always have taken a holistic approach to educating my students. Both history and Educational and Developmental Psychology are fields of study which require considerable writing and research; I am well practiced at both. I studied Art History in college. I am a certified history teacher. Additionally, while in graduate school I supported myself by tutoring all subjects as well as study, writing, and test-taking skills.
I have often found that educators "believe all children can learn". Throughout my career I have put those words into practice. Since graduating from Boston College, I have ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

With a Master of Education in Special Needs I acquired the skills and knowledge necessary to adapt instructional practices for diverse learners. Working in partnership with the child, parent(s), and school districts I developed meaningful learning activities addressing the specific academic needs of the child. I have tutored children and young adults whose abilities ranged from special needs to advanced placement. I have taught mathematics, writing, reading, social studies and science throughout elementary, middle school and high school.
Talking with students and analyzing their work samples determines their needs. I ask students to complete a "multiple intelligence" survey to determine their learning strengths. In designing delivery of services I incorporate specific strategies to complement their learning styles. For example, a visual/spatial learner would benefit from drawing pi ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I believe that all children learn best when they experience success. Therefore, I make sure to give all my students opportunities to succeed by asking questions that challenge students to think but are not impossible to answer. My teaching style involves a combination of constructivism and direct instruction. Instead of lecturing, I pose questions, calling on students randomly. When I restate what is correct about a student's answer, my students understand that they have successfully contributed to the learning process. I point out any misconceptions that might arise before they do, so my students avoid making common mistakes. I supplement my lessons with visual representations and videos for visual learners, as well as hands-on, inquiry-based activities for tactile learners. I have extensive experience using technology in the classroom and have designed many interesting laborator ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In my first teaching position, I worked with emotionally disturbed and learning disabled students at the elementary level in the South Bronx. This included providing individual, small group and whole class instruction to students with learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, and multiple disabilities. In my second and third year teaching, I worked at The Guild for the Blind on West 65th Street in New York City. It was a not-for-profit, non-sectarian agency that served persons of all ages who were visually impaired and multidisabled to achieve lives of dignity. In my particular class, there were six children, three assistants, one teacher and two health aides. All of my students were multiply and developmentally disabled and I had to accommodate all their levels of needs. I am currently teaching at a private Special Education school in Newton, MA. Here, I am teaching World Hi ... read more
