I have been a tutor for 23 years and I have taught Adult Basic Education for 12 years. I am still continuing my education to receive a Masters degree and plan to get my PhD. I work for a community college and have done advising, enrollment, testing, phone directory, and student sevices. I have attended many professional development workshops on education.
Critical thinking skills and untraditional ways are what I focus on. However the way someone learns, I will try to set the individual up to show how they learn and work with them. Recently Retired Female Engineer

I would classify my tutoring style as "old school." Ladies and gentlemen, the best way to learn a problem-based subject such as math or chemistry is to solve problems; there are no short cuts.
I am a recently retired engineer. I spent last summer working in a City of Detroit grade school as a tutor. About ten years ago I taught Environmental Science classes at Wayne State as an adjunct faculty. This is the only official experience I have had teaching/tutoring; however during my academic career I frequently explained course material to fellow students and to study partners. During the 30 years I worked as a Chemist and as an Engineer I was frequently asked to explain technical information to a lay audience since I seemed to have a knack for doing just that.

I like teaching. I enjoy watching the learning process to see how a student becomes better and better, improving his/her knowledge with time. I am flexible about teaching methods. Some students need a lot of theoretical aspects, then exercises. Other students need only exercises because they master the theory. Some students can be helped particularly with drawings, graphs, schemes (they are visual students). Others prefer hearing explanations (they are more auditive ones). Most of students are a combination of it (audio-visual).

A Little Bit About Me...

Although I have worked most of my career in industry, I have never stopped teaching. Teaching employees, customers, service engineers and other staff have always been one of my favorite parts of my job as a chemist. It’s important to be able to impart knowledge to the student smoothly and only to answer the asked questions. Too much information can cause a student to “overload”. This can make the student afraid to ask questions in the future or to think that the topic is so difficult.
