For writing, usually I conduct some exercises. The level of the critique and what to say depends heavily on the age of the student. For grammar, I would either find or create my own practice materials and we could go over whatever is necessary until I've decided that the student is making improvements or the student has succeeded.
Over the past year, I have tried to extend my ability to share my love and appreciation of English and literature with others. As an English/Communications major, I am very knowledgable in a variety of subjects including grammar, writing composition and reading comprehension. My educational and professional experience are both concentrated on writing. More narrowly, analytical writing and legislative reporting. My experience tutoring on writing goes back to when I was part of a volunteer peer program, tutoring English as a second language students to assist them with mastering the English regents. At the collegiate level, I was a school tutor for 100-200 level liberal arts class, helping numerous students write strong papers and beat Intro to Logic. I also was a teachers assistant for Politics and Film, a political theory cross-listed grad/undergrad class. I understand frustration at school because I experienced it myself. I believe a better grasp of communication (reading, writing, speaking skills) can change a student’s confidence about learning (and life) and improve scientific outcomes on class grades and standardized tests. The best teaching style in my opinion, explains how to research, plan and write essays, gives students time to practice these skills in class, and ensures students get feedback on how well they have done on each sub-skill. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.

Later I traveled with first a classical choir and then a rock band, put my editing skills to work for a geopolitical organization and lectured on economics, dialectical materialism, spirituality, and more mundane topics, such as camping and travel.
