I love helping students understand Math.

I received my BS degree in Math Education in Spring of 2001 at Florida State University. While at FSU I worked in the Math Help Center for three months. I taught math for two years and decided to choose a different career path in Actuarial Mathematics. I am currently finishing my master's degree at Florida State University. For two years I tutored math at all levels at Sylvan Learning Center in Tallahassee. In that time I learned different things related to presenting the math in a way that can be understood regardless of the level of the student. Mostly I focus on explaining the most important steps of a particular skill and then guiding the student to developing their understanding of that skill.
I like to break down whatever skill I'm teaching in the simplest form at first. This means explaining the concept of the skill in a way that the student can understand what it is ... read more

I also like to show an emphasis on creative explorations of problems and using problem solving as a unique means to discovery. More About This Tutor...

“You love what you understand and you understand what you are taught.” I believe learning should be fun and understandable. Many times, especially in science, students do not like a subject, because it is not explained in terms they understand. I believe the key is to relate any subject to something the students already understand/love. If a student needs help in math and they love M&M’s, then you can find an equation for the various colors in a bag of M&M’s or find the surface area of an M&M. Everything relates to everything, the connection just needs to be made. When a connection is made with previous knowledge there is a deeper understanding and you are less likely to forget what you have been taught. The key is to be creative and fun.

A Little Bit About Me...

Being around children that ranged from ages from six to twelve I had to find many different ways to teach kids how to learn things such as history even though they had problems reading and math even though they were just learning how to count. So at the start I would try a visual approach because if they could see the problem they were doing they had a chance to get the number right. If they had problems reading I would break down a word looking for smaller words that they knew. So I would have to say my teaching style would be an adapting teaching style because not all children learn the same way.
I started to do community service back in November of 2009. After I was unable to find a job I stayed at the local Boys and Girls club as a volunteer. I have been tutoring for four years, covering many academic subjects and ages. I have worked with four year olds, middle school students, high school students, college students, and even adults who were older than me. I have a natural gift that allows me to communicate with people from all different walks of life, which makes me a successful tutor. In addition to my strong communication skills, I also experienced a unique high school experience, so I find it easy to relate to students who prefer non-traditional methods of learning.
I believe that students learn best from teaching and therefore owning the material. This means that whenever I teach, I first explain the concept, then model my thought process of solving the problem, and then I have the student teach the material back to me. By teaching in this style, this allows the student the create his or her own understanding ... read more
