I am not young enough to know everything

I agree with the concept that each person learns a bit differently, and even more so that as a tutor, I should try and find the most effective style for my tutee. My academic career also taught me the importance of setting time limits for each action item; and switching tasks to keep the mind sharp.
You will see from my resume below that I have strong experience in math, science, engineering and computers. Physics is a challenging subject and it requires understanding of concpets, application of mathematics and anlytical reasoning. My style is to help students learn how to catch fish rather feeding them fish. I give emphasis on helping students develop their own reasoning, so that they can become independent learners.I usually explain concpets first and teach them how to apply these concpets for problem solving. Once they are good at understanding concpets, problem solving becomes easy. I have found that student mainly have difficulty learning concepts so i spend good amount of time in making them understand concpets by asking stimulating questions and finding their misconceptions.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been teaching for 25 years. I began as a high-school teacher, taught grade school and special education, and then spent 20 years as a university professor of English and philosophy. I started tutoring as a graduate student and have been doing it on and off now for 20 years.
I like working with grade-school students, but I like best a variety of teaching situations. That for me truly represents the challange of teaching. Only a diversity of students can bring learning to itself, reveal the demands of cognition for what they are. As a philosophy PhD this interests me very much.
