More About This Tutor...

As an undergraduate I worked at the mathematics tutor lab in our department. As a PhD student I both taught and assisted in the teaching of mathematics courses at the university level. Also I have experience with privately tutoring elementary, jr. high and high school students.
I help point to the truth, aiding the student in discovery. I try to avoid being overly didactic, and prefer to work by asking questions. The most satisfying thing about teaching is being able to witness and participate in the process of comprehension.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love being able to help a student or peer develop and implement new knowledge. I like to take the approach of teaching skill not just content. I am patient and easy going and will try my hardest to ensure that each individual student be treated as such. I thrive in the one on one teaching style and I hope to help each student reach his or her top potential. I would love to help other young writers find their way through the endless maze of grammar, spelling, and help them generate intriguing writing, not just correct writing. I like to think of grammar and spelling as certain tools to use and teach but I like to help a student get to a point where they can be proud and confident in their writing.
I graduated in 2009 with my BA in English and am currently pursuing my masters in writing. While at the undergraduate level I learned about all manner of skill in writing from research p ... read more

Most of my career has involved some level of teachng or training. I trained new volunteers during the Peace Corps, I taught rural Tunisian families how to use available resources to improve their lives, training natural education instructors and volunteers at the Wells Reserve, traqining and coordinating volunteers within my roles as Executive Director, completing all course requirements for my Maine Teacher Certification, obtaining Ed. Tech III, Highly Qualified status in Maine, and substitute teaching, and now in my role as Title I, Ed. Tech II at Valley View Community School in Farmington, NH where I work extensively with children with special needs.
I believe that questions are more powerful teaching tools than simply delivering answers. I do not wish to teach my students WHAT to think; my goal is to help students learn HOW to think, and to develop a pssion for learning which ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style was both original and personal. I have had the opportunity to travel to many parts of the world, and I brought those varied experiences to my teaching. The students would ask me to tell them stories of my travels. This was partly to get off the subject matter, but they also enjoyed hearing about different parts of the world as qwell.
I taught Language Arts from grades 7-12 for 27 years. I maintained a classroom, organized my curriculum as well as doing interdisciplinary projects. I retired from active teaching in 1999, but I did a brief period of tutoring with a young child with academic disabilities. I would really enjoy teaching again and would appreciate any opportunity to achieve this

A Little Bit About Me...

As a valued member of the ANA faculty and team I continually worked to lift the standards and proficiency of all the students that I taught both directly and indirectly to prepare them for the rigors of high school and college. As the English Department Chair I mentored and provided leadership to the staff I supervised as well as my fellow colleagues. I earned a BS in Education as well as a Certification in TESL. During my many years of teaching I have mentored and tutored students in English, History, ESL and Study Skills (which focused on time management, organization, note taking and test taking skills as well as building self-esteem.) I have an extensive background in volunteering and in promoting anti-bullying programs.

More About This Tutor...

I have been helping students improve their skills since 1989, and there is nothing that thrills me more than a student's "aha!" moment, when everything they are trying to learn just clicks for them. For the past several years I have taught introductory critical thinking and basic essay-writing; students come to me when they have difficulty finding the words for what is in their heads, and I work with them one-on-one to help them express their analyses. I have assisted many students in writing college acceptance essays, term papers, book reviews, and all other written assignments. I know how to help students establish good work habits and systematize their work for less drama-filled, more successful academic experiences.
My skills, which I learned in the Education Bachelor's degree program at the University of Connecticut, emphasize the development of critical thinking and clear ex ... read more

I have gained valuable experience in the classroom while studying Leadership: the importance of effective communication, listening skills, and persuasion. I am a calm and caring person, and am patient and creative while teaching. My students feel comfortable with me and I am able to bring out the best in them because of their comfort level.
As a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Northeastern University, I have gained experience in persuasive writing, research papers and presentations. I have tutored on a volunteer basis for English as a Second Language.

More About This Tutor...

As an undergraduate, my focus for studies in English were both Critical Literary Analysis and Creative Writing. Analytical writing was stressed heavily, giving me the ability to interpret a text based on intrinsic value. The creative tract allowed me to experiment with my own abilities while keeping in mind strategies implemented by others I have read and studied. A requirement for all English majors at the university was to have intermediate skills in a foreign language. I have taken four semesters of Spanish at the college level with additional language labs. Spanish was also my foreign language of choice throughout secondary school and I have had first hand practice from my work in Guatemala.

As a recent graduate from Salem State College, I have earned my BA degree in English, with a minor in History. Writing and reading is something I am very passionate about. I have learned different forms of writing, such as analytical, persuassive, reading responses, creative, and so on. With that experience, I have learned grammatical rules for writing that was very important to my success. I have never tutored, but I feel that with my knowledge or writing and reading can be useful to someone who is having difficulties in that area. I work very well one on one and believe I can help someone.
I've always enjoyed helping someone else. There is a certain satisfaction after seeing the look on their face of appreciation. With over 18 years of experience in Education I am capable of teaching to a variety of students and learning styles. My particular areas of expertise are composition, grammar, English literature (Shakespeare specialization), Latin, and American history. I am a working editor and writer and believe that the ability to communicate clearly and effectively (a skill I teach to all of my students) provides the foundation for all future learning.
It has been my experience that most students appreciate an opportunity to sit quietly and think carefully over a problem. Time for a short burst of creative and intense scrutiny is a rare luxury for most of my highly-stimulated students. My philosophy is that learning is a student's job and they should give that job the attention it deserves. I encourage my students to explore while learning but believe in providing a structure and models in whi ... read more

I have 12 years of full time high school English teaching experience. Beyond that, I taught theatre at the college level for four years and worked as a teaching artist in New York City for four more. My teaching style adapts to the needs of each individual student. I am very specific in terms of direction, thorough when it comes to facts and details, challenging to promote excellence and fair in evaluation. I have two years of experience teaching adults in college-level and public adult education settings. Additionally, I have about 3 years of experience working with children from infancy to adolescence and was a lead after-school teacher. My professional business background, entrepreneurial spirit and freelance writing career have aided in the practical development of my English, grammar, financial planning, customer service, sales and marketing skills.
Teaching is a facilitating process. I believe it is my job to aide the student in developing a more solid understanding of the coursework in front of them. This may involve explaining the same concept to the child in a variety of ways to help them understand. The child may also just require a patient instructor who is willing to keep practicing until they have reached the mastery stage of learning. Whatever the case may ... read more
