A Little Bit About Me...

I have experience teaching many types of students. I worked one-on-one, daily, with an autistic student during my last position, so I understand that not every student learns in the same way. I think it works well to give shorter lessons to a small group, and then work individually with the students. I like to encourage them to help one another if they feel confident in the subject. I pay great attention to verifying that each student is following the lesson. My main teaching style is "I do, you do," meaning I show them how to do a problem, or spell a word, and then they show me how. I like to work with the parent and child on any goals they have for the year, while updating the parent and child on progress, problems, and behavior.

A Little Bit About Me...

The purpose of my teaching is to allow every student to succeed. I will try any way possible to reach this goal for every child. Working in the sciences, I feel that inquiry learning is important and hands-on experience is essential. Each student has their own way of learning best and I try to find that learning style and use it whenever possible.
I graduated from IUP with a degree in Biology Education. I am certified in Biology and Middle School Science. I taught for one semester at Central Bucks School District where I taught Academic Biology, Astronomy and Oceanography. I then taught two years at Gateway School District where I taught 8th grade physical science. I now have a permanent position at Yough School District where I teach 7th grade Life Science. I am also currently pursuing my Masters in Education.

I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.

I began my teaching experience at Ohio University where I was offered a position as an anatomy TA due to my success in the course. During this time I was required to make sure that 30+ students had a clear understanding of both lecture material and the lab material which included complete cat dissection. After I received my bachelors degree in science from Ohio University I went on to receive my Masters in Science from Chatham University in Pittsburgh PA. I did very well in both the physiology and anatomy classes and because of this was asked to become a tutor for both undergraduate and graduate students at Chatham. Every one of my students saw a significant rise in their performance.
