I enjoy the challenge of working with children. My eldest daughter is a graduate of the University of Georgia and I have two teenagers currently in Middle and high school. They have augmented my ability to be patient and flexible when assisting with their homework. Further, their diverse curriculum has made it necessary to brush up on their current subjects as well as my teaching skills. Both are top students and both have won good citizenship awards. I feel that family and teacher support sets the dynamic that allows children to grow and gain knowledge in their ongoing endeavors.

A Little Bit About Me...

I utilize the experience I have in working with a wide variety of people to develop a relaxed, positive teaching style. I utilize a keep it simple method of teaching that is direct. It is designed to allow the student to build from memorization up to problem solving based on the principles, objectives and goals of the subject matter. I focus on developing the student's ability to utilize available resources, make decisions, and to act. This approach takes patience and organization to prepare, present and evaluate both the material and the student's progress. I have practiced this approach for over 30 years. I enjoy teaching because it keeps me on my toes and the rewards are clearly visible.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a life long learner, I have continued my education and learning to achieve continous personal growth. High values in education have driven me to earn a CAS degree in Educational Leadership. I believe that this has helped me become a better teacher in the classroom. Because the CAS degree requires multiple reasearch papers, it has allowed me to become an excellent grammical teacher. I have been teaching Home and Careers and Business classes for the past eight years. Grammar is an intracal part of these two disciplines. Furthermore, as part of my internship, I developed and implemented a study skills program at my school.
As a participant in the training of Learner Focused Schools, my focus for learning has always been on the student. I believe that all students have different needs. If given the proper services, all students can learn. Being a graduate of the Educational Leadersh ... read more

I like to discuss and communicate how various accounting rules and concepts can be rationalized. If one understands the motivation for the rules they can better anticipate how items should be handled and they are more likely to retain information. Simply memorizing facts and rules doesn't serve students well in the long run and that approach is only as good as their ability to recall the proper information at the right time. Even then though, while this may get them through tests and classes, they are not as successful when there is real-world situations that require them to apply their knowledge.

A Little Bit About Me...

All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. For lower level students, I investigate with them the development of the linear equations involved in setting up a relationship between two factors. A higher level student would solve multiple linear equations. A height vs. time linear relationship then can become quadratic, thus involving sports as an application.
My first career was as a Registered Professional Nurse (NYS licensure) for 25 years. During those years, I kept up my interest in various fields of math, such as Abs ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I am a professional singer, actress and dancer who has taught throughout my 15 year career. I truly love teaching, especially in a one-on-one or very small group setting. Currently I teach private lessons in: piano, voice and acting. I also teach small-group: Piano, Acting, Choir, Learn to Read Music, Creative Movement, Pilates, Boot Camp, Kick Boxing. I also work with the local home school community as a 'tutor' for math and English.
I believe in mentoring. It does take a few times for the student (young and old) to understand that I cannot teach them anything. I can present information to them and attempt to inspire them to learn, but they are the ones who ultimately teach themselves. I very much enjoy helping them figure out the answers to their own problems. My motto: It is my job to help you not need me anymore!

A Little Bit About Me...

When helping others, I do it two ways. I tell them how to do it and guide them through it. Other times, I show them how to do it. However, I do not do it for them. I would love to have the chance to help children succeed in their education! It would be an honor!
I graduated high school in 2000 with a local diploma and then went on to college at Utica School of Commerce. I graduated in 2002 with an Associated Degree as an Administrative Specialist. I began teaching in fifth grade when my science teacher conceded that I knew more about sharks than he did, so when we got to that lesson, I took over for two days. In tenth grade, I had an internship at my high school teaching ninth grade Global Studies. When I graduated college, I began substitute teaching while I wrote my first few novels. I have substituted in every major subject at the high school level. I have also been an adjunct professor teaching study skills and business english at a local college.
I tend to prefer lectures combined with textbook assignments as opposed to teaching either using films, powerpoint presentations or computers. I work best with motivated students, even those with lower abilities, though I teach exclusively at the high school level and above. A Little Bit About Me...

Once I am assigned a child I initally spend time going over a typical homework assignment to see where they are having some trouble. I get them to read out loud to me to see what their level of reading is. Some kids have problems sounding out the words or with simple rules of grammar. Once I see where they are at then I start bringing in some workbooks to help them in that particular area and apply that to their homework.
Along with my educational background I was a Girl Scout Troup leader for three years and a volunteer for the American Lung Association and American Heart Association. I enjoy working with kids and contacted Barbara Kline of the Utica School District and started working in the Tutoring program with her for four years. While in the tutoring program I assisted students from elementary school and highschool in reading and writing comprehension. I throughly enjoy ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a recent college graduate, I have a fresh idea of what goes on in the mind of a student. I know that there are various techniques that work best for one student over another and an educator must be flexible in molding their teaching style towards these strengths. I have found in my classroom experiences that in order for students to reach their full potential they must have interactions with an educator who shows flexibility, enthusiasm, and an all around interest in the students success. I have a great enthusiasm for learning and spreading knowledge and I try to transfer this enthusiasm to all my students. I make every effort to ensure all my students learn in an environment where they can successfully work towards their learning goals.
