More About This Tutor...

I began college as an engineering major, so I have background in advanced mathematics and physics. I went on to change my major to psychology where I gained knowlege of social and behavioral sciences, as well as research technologies and statistical analysis. Since graduating college with a B.A. in psychology, I have worked as a psychology researcher, accounting assistant, and in 3 different roles for an international pharmaceutical company. Through my job experience, I have gained knowledge in different business disciplines and areas such as Lean/Six Sigma and Supply Chain/Logistics planning.
I love teaching all ages and skill levels. I adjust my teaching style to the individual - some people are visual learners or oral learners or hands-on learners. I teach by example and try to encourage my students to understand "why" rather than just "how."

I graduated in May, 2010 from Indiana University with a BS in Biology and a minors in Environmental Management and African American Diaspora Studies. Through my biology curriculum I took many math, chemistry, biology and physics classes. I have excelled especially in chemistry, biology, and algebra and I have experience tutoring in high school level chemistry and math. Also, through my liberal arts degree I gained significant experience writing papers and editing other people's writing.
Science has always been very fascinating to me and I love to share what I have learned in the sciences. I think that it is important that all students have a good grasp of biology, chemistry and math to ensure a good understanding of how the earth works. I believe it is important to be patient with children. I want to make learning fun and interesting to my students by giving them examples they can ... read more

Due to my undergraduate experiences at NCAT, I was able to develop new skills while enhancing the ones that I already possessed. While at A&T, I earned a degree in African American studies, in which I learned extensive grammatical skills due to writing graduate level research papers. Basic education requirements enabled me to gain and understanding in many different subjects such as math and science. During my undergraduate career, I have tutored students in English and mathematics.
The most important thing to me is making sure each child is able to learn in a manner in which they feel comfortable. Each person's learning style is as unique as the individual themselves. So, I like to get input from the student as to how they would like lesson plans and exercises to be implemented. I don't believe that there are children who can't reach their fullest potential as long as there is ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in problem-based tutoring for algebra, and construct problems based on the textbook problems whenever possible. I let the student try the problem first, watching closely for any mistakes, and then teach the rules as necessary, and summarize mistakes after each set of problems. However, I can also teach all the rules beforehand if a student has been absent from class. For chemistry, I reviewed class notes with students and then explained the fundamentals whenever there was a question, and then did practice problems with the students.
I have two years of tutoring experience in college chemistry with the University Learning Center at Penn State. I tutored over twenty students in college chemistry. I am currently tutoring and mentoring a student in High School algerbra and chemistry for free.

I believe that learning is the goal of life. While there are successes and failures there is always learning. Teaching is a priveldged position which requires integrity, honesty, humility. Teachers are duty bound to their students. Teaching is more that just imparting subject matter knowledge, it is about advancing a students critical thinking and ideally advancing their sense and belief in themsleves. All students can learn and it is up to the teacher to find the right method and style to make the greatest impact. I have been blessed with several great teachers in my life. I am now at a point where I want to become one of them for the next generation.

I have had about 30 yrs teaching experience in middle school, elementary school and pre-school settings. I have regularly tutored before and after school both individuals as well as groups. Most of my experience has been in the science and math areas with Algebra I being the highest math level I have taught. While pursuing my education degrees, I paid a lot of attention to child development as well as the thinking process. This has helped me to make sense of how a particular student is thinking and feeling so that I can find individual ways to help him/her progress. I have had great success with helping students reduce their anxiety, feel more confident and improve their performance.
First of all, I love to teach. I believe that a good tutor must treat each student as a unique individual. While hands on manipulatives may be very helpful to one student, another may flourish und ... read more

I believe that all students are worth my time, my ears, my voice, and my compassion. I believe that all students cc an learn, all students want to learn, all students can have fun with learning, and all students have something to teach me. I believe that children should be looked at as individuals with different interests, learning styles, and needs. I believe children learn best with a connection to prior knowledge. I believe that children learn from prior experience and hands on opportunities.
As a 2010 graduate of IUPUI, my student teaching experience has allowed me to work with a diverse group of individuals. I earned a bachelors degree in Elementary Education with special attention to reading from Purdue University. In Aug. 2008-May 2009 I taught kindergarten at West Grove Elementary in Center Grove Community School Corporation. During this time I filled in for two teachers on extended leaves. This experience allowed me to gain knowledge about teaching and how to instruct diverse students. I learned many different teaching strategies, including differentiation and integration with multiple subjects. I learned many ways to help students with phonics, reading, writing and math skills at the kindergarten level. Towards the end of the school year when the kindergarten teachers returned I subbed throughout the district in all grade levels, K-6.
