A Little Bit About Me...

After I earned my BFA, I started working towards my Master of Art in Art History. I have an understanding of most studio art forms and extensive knowledge of Art History. When I started working on my thesis, I joined the Minnesota Reading Corps, and have been teaching early literacy ever since. For the last three years, I have been working in Head Start classes, preparing children for kindergarten. I am currently enrolled in the FasTrack program at Bemidji State University working on getting my teaching license in Visual Arts K-12.
I have been researching the Search Institute's 40 Developmental Assets because I plan on using them as a base for the children that I work with at Community Action Duluth through the Circles of Support program. A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working one on one or with small groups of students. I enjoy the challenges of tutoring teenagers, as well as adults. I am a firm believer in teaching by example, and gaining fundamental understanding of material as opposed to “teaching for a test.” I engage students and try to challenge the confidant while offering support to the less self-assured. The reason that I choose to tutor is not so much for the money but for the gratifying feeling of helping someone succeed, and I sincerely believe that comes through in my approach.

As an undergraduate student I worked at a general science and math tutor as well as a class specific calculus I tutor. I was teaching assistant for calculus I for two semesters and ran a study table for the athletic department for student with a GPA less than 2.5. As a graduate student I have taught both majors and non-majors biochemistry lab as well as general chemistry lab and discussion. I have had the opportunity to lecture, write quizzes, tests, and homework for college level courses as well as grade all course material.
Teaching is a very important part of learning; it is an ongoing process that is active and not static. I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. Under the six years of my tutoring, both of these "disabled" kids were completely mainstreamed and even taking some AP and challenge classes. I believe that any kid can learn if they are taught in a way that is fun and structured. I tutored these kids in Math, Science, Social Studies and English. I also spent a semester as a Teaching Assistant in an upper level Philosophy course during my undergrad. Most of my TA tutoring was helping college students write papers.

A Little Bit About Me...

When tutoring I usually ask prompting questions to assist the person in working through a problem. By building off of the skills the student already has it helps them better understand the process. If a student is learning new material or does not understand the way something was explained I will try to come up with an alternative method. I will go through an example with them step by step ensuring that they understand what happens along the way. I try to relate problems to real life so that they will remember what they have learned better.
I have taken more than the amount of credits I need to graduate with a BA in mathematics from Luther College. I have minors in physics and chemistry. I have always enjoyed math.
