A Little Bit About Me...

When teaching a math lesson I begin by going over skills already mastered that lead to the lesson at hand. After teaching the new material I then have the student try a similar problem while I watch. If necessary I coach them along, pointing out any problem areas. Then I require the student to try more of the same type of problems until he or she has mastered the new material. It's very important to me that the student understand what he or she is doing and why it works. In other words, I don't just teach them how to do individual problems.
I have enjoyed teaching in private schools of and on for the last 22 years. I have tutored Algebra through Calculus I and Elementary Statistics for the last three years. 1.5 years at both Wichita State University and Washburn University. I'm currently working on a second Bachelors degree in mathematics, but this time with an emphasis in Actuarial Science. This mixes calculus, algebra, and statistics, along with some business classes, into one, keeping them fresh in my mind.
I like starting with the given information and stepping through the processes to solve a problem. Reminding them of, or even showing them, the rules, properties, and examples in the book. I normally try to find the method that best works with each pupil, then highlight on that. I also make sure not to do the work for the student. I will sometimes come up with a similar problem to work through so they can see what's really going on within the problem.

From May 2007 to August 2010, I attended Emporia State University where I worked on a dual-bachelor’s degree program in physics and engineering. In August 2010, I transferred to Kansas State University to complete the program. During my last year at Emporia State University, I worked in the Brighton Laboratory, tutoring students in a variety of math courses ranging from Beginning Algebra to Calculus I.
