I have earned a Bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in Nutrition and Spanish. I am currently in graduate school studying integrative medicine. I do have experience with tutoring students with special needs including students with autism.
I like to have organization and structure while tutoring but I also am flexible and can change my approach on how I am helping the student based on his/her body language. If a student is bored and loves sports, after reading I love to go outside and play basketball with them while asking them questions about what we've just learned. My preferred method of teaching is hands-on, through real experiments. Unfortunately, experiments cannot always be done, so I use lots of illustrations and age-appropriate analogies that are easy to relate to. Many times students are convinced that science is a subject too difficult to conquer, that they must just survive it, but science is all around us. I strive for that "a-ha" moment when a student realizes that all biological and physiological processes are interrelated and that the trick to understanding science is to build on previously learned concepts. While earning my BA in economics from The University of Texas, I also completed all my pre-med courses. This has provided me with a strong background in mathematics, social sciences, and natural sciences.
