I have been working with children and adolescents in a variety of capacities for 20+ years. I truly enjoy their energy and their desire to be successful given the right encouragement and direction. For the past 4-5 years, I have been a substitute teacher and tutor for K-12, working with a culturally diverse mix, in the areas of math, English, science, health education, music, journalism, and theatre. I have received pictures, flowers and numerous other tangible "thank you's!" from parents and children and love this work!
Given the right atmosphere, I honestly believe anyone can learn. Unfortunately, many individuals are given labels, especially regarding their learning capacity, and once that belief system is in place, the expectations are often lowered and self-esteem suffers.
