A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a tutor for the last few years, and I officially became a level 1 and level 2 certifiet tutor through the college reading and learning associations. I have worked with students and peers in basic math, and algebra subjects as well as biology and advanced science courses. I am a recent college graduate with a degree in Biology and minors in chemistry and psychology. I graduated with honors and I am also a former student athlete. I know a great deal about how to work with students as my mom is n elementary school teacher and I have volunteered with her classes multiple times and I have also given pitching lessons to younger kids in my hometown. I am employed as a Math Tutor at a company in Asheville. Before this, I lived in Raleigh where I worked for several distinguished companies as a Math Tutor. I have taught SAT Math prep at Cary Academy during the last two summers and at Roxboro Community School where I worked primarily as a Spanish Teacher.
I like to use examples and cater my lessons to what the student needs to work on (i.e. homework, test-prep). I also differentiate my style based on whether the student learns best through audio, visual, or kinesthetic means. Effective, caring tutoring from an experienced tutor

I summarize my approach to tutoring with "3 E's": Enthusiasm, Engagement, and Encouragement. I try hard to make each session fun and to engage the student in seeking the solution, rather than just teaching him or her a method.
I have been tutoring in math since I was in Jr High. Initially my students were sisters and brothers, then nephews and nieces, and finally I began tutoring as a second career. I understand that any child can run into problems with schoolwork. I try to find out why the child is having a problem before trying to help them. Did he miss something and fall behind? Is she simply bored with the subject? The approach I take with the child depends on the answers to these questions. I feel it is important for the learner to understand that there is a reason for making the effort to learn each subject. In math, I like to assign the numbers and equations to subjects the learner likes, such as pizza, sports or music, for example. I also find it is beneficial to make references to the different careers one might use the knowledge learned in the child's classes.
